Error bar

Post by villela »

The option "Different error values for every point" in "Error Bars" seems do not work.
I would like to suggest an option of using error bars in a xy plot, importing a array of 5 columns where the first is x, second is x -error, third is x +error, fourth is y -error and fifth is y +error. It is interesting allow to use less x values than available in the graph (not be necessary to use all x), avoiding the xy graph to become blurry due to many error bars.

If you mean that it doesn't work as you would like for it to work, OK. But it worked fine for me just now. If I misunderstand and you have an example where this feature doesn't work at all, please let me know.

That's a good idea, but will probably take some sort of import plugin to handle this correctly.

You probably haven't noticed this (because it's a dumb way to do this and I can't fathom why I did it this way). From the Help topic for error bars:

By default error bars will be drawn at every data point. You can skip data points by using the Symbol Frequency option on the Symbol/Line Styles dialog. For example, if the frequency is set to 1 then error bars will be drawn at every data point; if 2 then error bars are drawn at every other point.

I'll almost certainly add a frequency option to the error bar dialog, and try to figure out a way to keep from breaking old saved files that used this "feature".

Sorry, I didn't know how to use the option "Different error values for every point" in "Error Bars". Really there is no need to import an array with five columns directly form the error bar menu. The user can append 4 xy graphs using File>>Append and then use the error bar menu.
But I tried using the Symbol Frequency option on the Symbol/Line Styles dialog and the program didn't skip points (the frequency was set to 10 then error bars wasn't drawn skipping 10 data points).
When I change the xy graph color the error bar color don't change to the same color. I can't edit the error bar color too.

It would likely be helpful if you'd save this graph as a DPlot file and send it to me.

This one I get. Error bars will always be drawn in black, and there is no way around that. That's a good suggestion for the next release.

I have just sent an e-mail with the xy graph to support@dplot.com.

Sorry,

I thought I should set the frequency to the x +error, x -error, y +error and y -error curves. Now I know I must set the frequency to the xy graph curve.

Thanks again.

I appreciate the file, but don't understand the problem. Here's your original file:

which is admittedly a bit "busy".

and here's the same plot after setting the "Symbol frequency" to 10:

Looks right to me, but if you have any questions please let me know.

No reason to be sorry; that's a goofy setting that will be corrected in the next release.
