David,
Right now, when selecting just an X and Y column, the non-numeric Y label in row one is used as the Y axis label, and no legend label is created for curve 1. However, many times I find myself selecting first one column (X+a single Y column), then setting append to ON, and selecting more data to add to the plot. Now, everything except the first curve is labeled.
Would it make sense that even if only two columns are selected, that the Y column's label would also be used as the curve label, but hide the legend until more data is added? That way, if additional data is appended to a plot, curve 1 already has its label. I would think it less of a nuisance if after adding more data to the original plot, that I would have to turn the legend on, but at least all curves would already be labeled.
Just a thought.

I see what you're after, but I think a better way will be to add the ability to request the Y axis label and legend information from DPlot for an existing plot. Then when appending a new curve, check to see if the existing curve (if there's only one) has a legend; if not, use the Y axis label (if there is one) as the legend for that curve and wipe out the Y axis label. I'll add this to my to-do list.
